Since purchasing the farm, our goal was to cultivate the land and one day grow crops. We were blessed to meet a local farming family who leases some of our land for farming row crops. We've planted an orchard of apples and persimmons and enjoy picking wild blackberries every year.
We started with about 6 acres of watermelons in 2019.
We expanded to row crops after clearing more stumps in more fields in 2020. We grew peanuts over two seasons, 2020 and 2021. Peanuts grow underground, the plant is flipped, and then picked.
After two years of peanuts, they planted cotton, expanding to around 30 acres of row crops.
As a food source for the animals during winter, our farmer plants oats giving us beautiful views in spring.
After researching what kind of apples can grow in our region (Anna and Golden Dorsett) and finding a really tasty persimmon (Jiro), we took the plunge and purchased some locally grown trees from a great nursery and have enjoyed the produce over the last three years. It is a lot of work pruning and keeping the orchard healthy, but very much worth it.
